Go to Gmail’s website and go to Settings on the top right. Go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP page and make sure IMAP is enabled.

Now open your brand new installation of Outlook 2010. It will start up a wizard to set up your email address. Click the option to Manually configure and click Next.

Click Internet Email and click Next.

In this window put in your name and email address. This is the name that others will see who you send emails to. Set the incoming server to imap.gmail.com and the outgoing server to smtp.gmail.com. Then click More Settings.

You can rename the mail account here which by default is your email address. I name it something more pleasing like “Gmail”. Then go to Advanced tab.

Set the incoming server to 993 and encryption to SSL. The outgoing server should be 587 and encryption should be TLS.

Go to Outgoing Server tab and check the box for outgoing server requires authentication.

Once you click OK it will bring you back to the “Add New Account” screen where you should click Test Account Settings which tells you if it is set correctly or not. When you get a success screen then you are good to go. Click OK and enjoy your newly set up Gmail in Outlook.

In Windows7 go to Start > Control Panel and look for Mail. If you cannot find it type “mail” in the search box on the top right. Then click Mail.

This will bring up the Mail Setup dialog box with Show Profiles section that we are interested in.

In most cases you will just have one mail profile. If you delete this profile then all your Outlook settings will be reset to default. To delete click Remove and then press OK.

Now that Windows7 is officially out and available to everyone, most people would want to take advantage of the shiny new operating sysem from Microsoft. But how do you check if your mahcine meets the requirements for Windows7? You can go by the official Microsoft requirements or use the Upgrade Advisor. Microsoft has outlined very general system requirements of a PC with 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM for 32-bit version. Windows7 Upgrade Advisor gives a much more customized report specific to your computer and network environment.

Windows7 Upgrade Advisor is a simple 8Mb applicaiton which can be downloaded and run instantly. One thing to note is that the Advisor recommends to connect other USB and external devices such as phones before running it. This way you can find out all at once if all of the attached devices are supported by Windows7.

When the Advisor finishes running a report is generated showing incompatibilities and and issues that may arise either from hardware or software components that are being used. The Advisor provides a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the report if your computer is capable of support both types of operating systems.

• Advanced Settings: There are a few very advanced settings in the application which allow you to define only certain sets of files in a folder to be backed up. Such as all files with the word “Alice” or all pictures with the name “Birthday” in it should be backed up.
• Virtual Drive: Another very nice feature is the ability to add Mozy as a virtual drive on your computer. This basically means you can copy (or cut) and paste any files or folders directly on to the Mozy virtual drive and it will be copied over to Mozy’s servers. This is especially helpful if you do not prefer to use the backup utility.
• Restore Files: In order to restore files from Mozy to your computer simply select which files and folders you would like to restore and where you would like to save them on your computer. Mozy does the rest. It will instantly start downloading all your files securely to your computer. If you would like to restore a single file to a previous version simply right click on the file and click Restore to bring up more options. All changes to files backed up with Mozy will be automatically saved for the past 30days. This means, if you writing a new chapter for your book every week then all the changes are chronologically saved and can be recovered independent of each other. In case you lost your computer Mozy has a step-by-step utility which will restore all files as it appears on the Mozy backups on to your new computer.

And by unlimited I really do mean unlimited – there are no restrictions for disk space or the number of files or folders.

Backups are an essential component of the computer world. Computers and hard drives fail at an alarming rate and there are very few easy to use, affordable backup solutions for average home computer users. Everest Home Edition “offers the world’s most accurate system information and diagnostics capabilities, including online features, memory benchmarks, hardware monitoring, and low-level hardware information. Everest does its job as advertised packed in a tiny package ( less than 4MB).

Keep in mind that the company making this product is no longer giving away the free version. The old version is still available from Major Geeks. But I would recommend getting the new Ultimate Edition for about $40. When you first install Everest it will run a 40 point report which covers pretty much everything. It gives you a detailed list which can be saved to a file, emailed or printed.

If you wish to see this information in real time without generating the 40-point report everytime, head to the Everest Home Edition application window which has sections that you can click and see stats. It even shows you the current CPU and hard disk temperatures (depending on what sensors came prebuilt with your machine).

Everest free edition also provides a handful of benchmarking utilities memory read, write and latency. It might be useful if you are having memory leak issues or if you really want to check memory usage.

Mozy

Mozy is one of those really easy to use software liked by the average user as well as the IT geek. Right off the bat Mozy offers a 2GB free account for storing anything and everything. The automated backup software works as advertised and takes the hassle of manually uploading your files and folders. What happens if you need more than 2GB? Mozy offers an unlimited online backup solution for less than $5 a month. You can also go for the yearly subscription for about $55 with 1 month free or a biennial subscription will set you back a little over $100 and comes with 3 months free.

What can you expect with a Mozy account?
Security of the data is taken seriously with 128-bit SSL support and multiple encryption schemes to choose from to ensure your data remains impenetrable. The automatic backup feature with scheduling will enable you to set the backup to run at 10PM or 2AM or whatever time you wish. The incremental backups allow only the changes to files to be backed up instead of transferring the whole file each time. This saves on bandwidth and time. If that is not enough Mozy also features a bandwidth throttling mechanism where you can limit the amount of traffic that Mozy can use at any time. This feature comes in handy if Mozy backup are cutting in to your YouTube video streaming. Mozy also supports multiple versions of your files and can revert back to any of the past 30 file revisions. Mozy supports Windows and Mac’s but not Linux for now.

Mozy also has an affiliate program where you can earn a few bucks if you refer a few friends. It is not offered automatically and my application is currently waiting for Mozy’s approval process.

Carbonite

Carbonite is another unlimited online backup provider. Unlike Mozy though Carbonite does not offer a free 2GB account. They do provide a free 15-day trial subscription which you have to renew to continue using the service. Costs are comparative to Mozy at about $55 per year with discounts applied for 2 and 3year subscriptions. Some of the highlights of Carbonite are the small application which tags files and folders for upload and automatically gets to work to backup. Similar to Mozy, Carbonite offers clients for both Mac and PC and has an extensive support section with several tutorials and easy to follow guides.

The affiliate program for Carbonite is quite impressive. It allows affiliates to earn 40% commission for every sale. It is offered through Commission Junction which you would have to sign up for separately. However my application was automatically rejected for unknown reasons. So best of luck if you are planning on selling Carbonite.

IDrive

The major difference between IDrive and the rest is that IDrive does not offer “unlimited” disk space. You get 2 flavors of IDrive – Basic and Pro. Basic comes with free 2GB online disk space for your backup needs. With a Pro account you get 150 GB of storage space at $4.95 per month or $49.50 per year. The feature set of IDrive is well equipped with a Windows Explorer like interface which is known to about 90% of computer users. By default IDrive automatically selects and backs up the most commonly used folders such as the Documents, Pictures and Videos. You can also run the backup feature to “sync” between folders on your computer and on the cloud about every 10 minutes and keeps older revisions of documents for up to 30 versions of the same files. The Search & Restore function is a very nice utility to replace accidentally deleted files or something that has been overwritten. But the best feature common to all the online backup solutions is the ability to restore files and access to backed up data from any computer capable of accessing the internet. First thing to do it to link your Word 2007 installation to your own website. To do this fire up Word 2007. Click the MS Office icon and click New.

In the new pop-up dialog box click New Blog Post and click create.

This should have brought up a new window called Register A Blog Account.

Click on Register Now on the window and select your blog provider. If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog then select WordPress. The fill out the details as shown below.

After your settings are accepted you will get a confirmation stating registration successful. From that point onwards you are ready to publish posts directly to your blog from MS Word 2007.

There is a separate option if you would like to host your pictures on your own website and domain. In the Picture Options pop up specify the provider as My Own Server. The Upload URL should point to the directory (or folder) where all other images are being stored. You can also specify a different location for uploaded images via Live Writer. Just remember to set up the permissions for anyone to view and access the files under that folder. In case of a WordPress blog the uploaded images are stored in YOUR-WEBSITE/wp-content/uploads/. The source URL is the address of your website where your images would be displayed on. For example: for TechVirgin.com the Upload URL would be http://techvirgin.com/wp-content/uploads/ and the Source URL would be http://techvirgin.com/.

XAMPP Installation

To install XAMPP in Windows head over to the download section and grab the xampp-win32-version-installer.exe file. The installation is very straightforward. Prior to install just make sure your dont have any other conflicting programs using port 80 on your machine. (You most probably don’t.)

If you try to install XAMPP on a Vista machine you will see a warning popup. You can ignore it – I am running XAMPP on Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and I have not seen any reduction of functionality.

Proceed to install XAMPP and sit back and relax. The process takes about 5 minutes.

Once the install is completed you will see a XAMPP icon in the taskbar.

Click the icon once to bring up the XAMPP Control Panel. From here you can easily go in to the settings of each individual component and stop or restart MySql, Apache and other services. Make sure that the services are running.

XAMPP Configuration

To configure XAMPP to your liking launch your favorite web browser and point it to localhost or your own machine. XAMPP gives you access to tools like phpMyAdmin, Webalizer, PHP Switch, Mercury Mail and FileZilla FTP .

All the website files are located under the htdocs directory under the default installation path of XAMPP installer. In my case the program installed under C drive and website files are located under C:\xampp\htdocs\. If you install a local copy of WordPress or Joomla or Drupal or anything else then you can create several sites under their own sub-directory.

• Load Outlook and go to Tools – Options
  
• Make sure you are in the Preferences tab and click Calendar Options.
  
• Click Add Holidays button.
  
• Check United States and any other country whose holidays you would like display on the calendar.
  
• Click OK and you are done.
